While DOA's Joey "Sh**head" Keithley is the rare exception, if you take a walk down any hipster street in any American city you'll soon realize the cold hard fact that punk rock doesn't age well.  I may wish to hold it closed, but I no longer look down my nose at the hippies on Haight Street in San Francisco or Telegraph Ave in Berkeley.  As I've said before, if I judge the guy in tie-dye, dreads, Birkenstocks and cloud of patchouli harshly I must also do the same to the bemohawked dude beside him in studded leather jacket, bondage pants, Discharge t-shirt, and cloud of b.o. holding a leash with a similarly rancid, miserable looking pitbull on the other end.  No disrespect to punk rock icons like Mr. Keithley, Charlie Harper or Keith Morris but as I got older the music became less relevant to me, especially after I had kids.  I mean The Ramones are timeless and I still listen to The Clash regularly but it's been a while since I've spun the DOA, UK Subs or Circle Jerks.

Even so, I totally dig Sloan’s Hardcore 7” the source of tonight’s dedication song “Jenny.”  Sloan seem to have made peace with the fact that they will never attain that Weezer-level of fame they so richly deserve.  On the plus side for us fans, that means Sloan get to do whatever the hell they want- including put out a 7” vinyl hardcore single with an album length bonus download of their versions of classic hardcore songs by bands like Angry Samoans, Minor Threat and (here they are again) Circle Jerks.  You’ve gotta love it- a genius Power Pop band of guys now in their mid-40’s kicking ass on a bunch of snotty teenage-angst ridden rants.  I especially love the picture sleeve- an homage to Minor Threat’s 7” swan song “Salad Days.”

Minor Threat, 1985

Sloan, 2013
Sure the Sloan record is pure nostalgia, but it is fun as hell too.

The timing of the Sloan release is interesting because after years of listening to nothing but hip hop, my son Jack has been getting into hardcore lately.  Based on what Sonoma kids listen to from the era, you'd think Minor Threat and The Misfits were the only punk bands around in the 80's.  It's almost like some weird music embargo was in place and those two groups were the only ones that managed to breach the blockade.  I blame Hot Topic.  In any case, I've enjoyed broadening Jack's musical horizons.  He of course
first asked to hear- you guessed it.... The Misfits and Minor Threat.  After that though, I set him up with Angry Samoans' Back From Samoa, Black Flag's Damaged, and for some scorching hometown flavor This Is Boston Not LA.  It's been fun listening to those records with him- hearing them with his ears.  Hardcore was never my favorite music as I've always been a melody fan.  And yes, those who do not have an ear for the music might quibble with my designation of groups like Stiff Little Fingers
and The Damned as "melodic," but they certainly were to me.  I definitely appreciate the power of hardcore- there's no denying its speed and fury.  The fact that it was mostly made by suburban white boys just like me was also a selling point.  Plus, these were the
I was there!
halcyon days of the "all ages matinee hardcore show" when we got to see Black Flag, Husker Du, The Misfits and many others at Boston clubs where we were not welcome after dark.  Once I got to college at Emerson there were also a ton of hardcore shows at VFW halls and Community Centers where I saw bands like Minor Threat, The Necros and The Meatmen.  Would I have rather been seeing The
I was here too!
Ramones or The Clash every weekend instead?  Sure, but I missed the scenes in New York in 1976 and London in 1977 so I was going to take full advantage of my scene:  Boston in 1982.

The thing I liked least about hardcore was what was first called slamdancing, then moshing.  It just seemed so pointless to me- a bunch of jocks playing football in front of the stage, completely oblivious to the band.  Stage diving was even worse- I thank Jello Biafra for bringing it to Boston at a Dead
Jello in 1981
Kennedy's show in what would eventually be the dining hall of my Emerson dorm, Fensgate.  The practice of jumping up on stage, grabbing the mic from the singer and screaming into it- well I've hit on that one before.  At my first punk shows it was pogo dancing- jumping straight up and down.  Yes you would bounce off other people and toes were stepped on (we were all wearing Chuck Taylors so no harm) but the point was not to slam into other people.  Moshing seems all about drawing attention to yourself, battling for
Pogo Dancing!
supremacy in "the pit."  Pogoing faced the band and to me was all about celebrating music you loved so much you had to jump for joy.  The sucky thing about the advent of moshing in Boston was that people started doing it at all shows- not just hardcore bands.  I'll never forget being at The Channel and getting shoved out of the way by a bunch of dudes moshing at a Hoodoo Gurus concert.  Putting up with a pit full of douche bags was the price of admission when you saw hardcore bands like Negative Approach or Deep Wound but the HOODOO GURUS?!?!  Come on!

The Dreaded Mosh Pit

That said, I will never forget seeing DOA at the tiny club Cantones near Government Center. A particularly fierce mosh pit broke out during the first song "F**cked Up Ronnie" and someone jumped up and smashed one of the ceiling tiles.  Within a minute half the ceiling tiles were down and the room was filling up with asbestos dust.  Owner Teddy Cantone runs on stage and tries to calm everything down but DOA didn't really help him any by launching into "The Enemy."  Then the rest of the ceiling tiles came down along with a lot of the metal structure holding them in place and the cops busted in to kick us all out.  Best two song show EVER!
DOA, truly hardcore in '81

I later heard one of the kids at the show turned up the next day with a load of ceiling tiles from his dad's company and rebuilt the ceiling.  Don't know if that's true or not but I really hope it is.

As a postscript I’ve got to mention that after 35 years , DOA are finally calling it quits.  Believe it or
"Mr. Speaker..... Mr. Sh**thead
has the floor"
not, Joey Sh**head has decided to run for political office in British Columbia.  I respect DOA's tenacity, but I haven't bought any of their records since the early 90's.  The last time I saw them was in 1994 or so at legendary all ages punk rock collective 924 Gilman in Berkeley.  I made the mistake of taking my wife Jaime to the show.  It would be an understatement to say she did not have a good time- she found the 14 year old punks spitting on each other especially horrifying.  A few years earlier Girlfriend Jaime may have pretended to be okay with filthy punk rock clubs, but Wife Jaime was having NONE of it.

I was a shy kid growing up and the social aspects of school were always a challenge.  Bullies could see this a mile away so I was often an easy target for their douche baggery.  In most cases I could stay out of their way by walking to and from classes by a different route.  When I was in high school I had my tormentor's class schedule memorized as well as my own yet that didn't stop him from randomly shoving me up against some lockers or punching me whenever he could.  He even pointed a home made, and according to him loaded, zip gun at my head one day while I was standing at my locker.  Good times.  My wife Jaime asked me why I never told an adult, but that's the thing about bullying- it shames the victim, not the perpetrator.  Back then teachers ascribed it to "boys will be boys" and some male teachers seemed to get a perverse kick out of it.  As for my family, just the thought of my father finding out (I couldn't imagine ever telling him), well that is a nightmare that even now makes me feel like throwing up.  Anyway, it's no wonder that to this day I have an Eminem-level hatred of bullies.

I was rarely physically abused by the jocks in my high school, though their verbal abuse could be pretty devastating.  Not that being called "F***in' Devo" (damn you "Whip It," damn you to hell) was in itself especially harsh but when delivered in front of a bevy of hot jock girlfriends it definitely stung.  This could go two ways, either the girlfriends would laugh along or they would make a big show of sticking up for me while still laughing at my expense, which was somehow even worse.  In any case, I grew to be as wary of the jocks as I was of the other bullies.  To be fair, I should point out that my use of "jock" in this case refers almost exclusively to our school's football players- loud, aggressive, beer swilling- you know the type.  These
The REAL Deltas
were the guys who called everyone "faggot" but always seemed to be dressing up like cheerleaders with huge breasts at our mandatory pep rallies (which always left me feeling vulnerable and exposed- not at all "peppy").  For the record, I don't recall ever being sh*t on by soccer players, basketball players or any other athletes.  The funny thing is, our school always did much better in soccer than in football, yet it seemed to me that the football players ruled the school.  They called themselves "The Deltas" after the fraternity from National Lampoon's Animal House.  I found this almost head-explodingly ironic because The Deltas in the movie are the outcast rejects from all the other fraternities at Faber College.  Sure Otter and Boon are cool, but Pinto, Flounder, D-Day, Bluto and the rest are complete social misfits.  I totally identified with Tom Hulce's character Pinto in that movie so it was rough watching the jocks in my high school appropriate the "Delta" identity for themselves.
The Omegas
Come on!  These jocks were clearly evil Omegas and the fact that they called themselves Deltas (something I'd never have the guts to do) was infuriating!

The jocks (I refuse to call them "Deltas") all hung around together and walked down the center of the hallway so the rest of us had to get out of the way.  Like the Omegas pictured above they had letterman jackets, green with the big white D on the front, that made them easier to spot and get out of the way.  The D on those letterman jackets was for Duxbury of course, but, in a tidy piece of alliteration, it also stood for Dragons, our team mascot.  By junior year I had finally managed to come
Current Duxbury Dragons mascot
(In the 80's it had more of an Olde English
look but this is all I could find)
together with a group of fellow fringe dwellers like myself, bonding over our shared love of punk and new wave music.  My friends and I reviled the whole Dragon concept.  (I wrote a poem with the line "big white D in a sea of bile" that thankfully I never showed anyone.  What?  You think your 11th grade poetry was any better?  I'm telling you right now it wasn't.)  Senior year I kicked it up a notch and published a vicious polemic in our English class newspaper, subtly titled "Athletics=Mush," about how the athletic programs were destroying young people by crushing any hint of their individuality.  You know, a "think piece."  The football players all made a big show at lunch that day of saying they were going to "end me" but nothing came of it.  I was loving being a hero to my small circle of friends too much to be scared of payback.  In fact, one football player took me aside after class the next day and told me he thought I was right!  My screed started with the sarcastic line "George Orwell would be proud..."  In a rebuttal the following week one of my classmates started with "Yes, George Orwell would be proud..." and went on to make far better use of the 1984 reference than I had.  It really bugged me that she understood Orwell better than I did because, you guessed it, she was a school athlete.

Sonoma Valley High School mascot
(at least it's facing a different direction than Duxbury's)
Thirty plus years later it feels like everything has come full circle.  My daughter Veronica just started at Sonoma Valley High School and made the freshman volleyball team.  This makes her.... a Sonoma Dragon!  That's right- Sonoma has the same school colors and the same mascot as my high school.  It started last summer when Nica joined a travel softball team run by the varsity coach called the Sonoma Lady Dragons.  I bought a hat to cheer them on;  it features a "big white 'S' in a sea of bile" rather than a "big white 'D' in a sea of bile" but the concept is the same.  This week Jaime and I drove down to Terra Linda High in San Rafael to watch Nica's team win their first volleyball match.  Seeing the team bus in the parking lot, I realized this is the first time my daughter has ever ridden a big yellow school bus.  She loved every minute of it- the bus ride, the game, doing homework in the bleachers while cheering on the JV and the varsity teams.  I've got to say it was great seeing her have such a wonderful time.  One week in her high school experience is already 180 degrees different from mine and that's just what I want for her.

One thing is sure- the high school years are a rich time in our lives and, good or bad, a time we'll never forget.  Whole years in the late 80's are a blur but high school memories are as vivid now as they were back then.  It's also funny how many of the social constructs and rules established in high school never seem to go away.  Like the Bowling For Soup song I played tonight says:  "High School Never Ends:"

Four years you think for sure
That’s all you’ve got to endure
All the total dicks
All the stuck up chicks
So superficial, so immature
Then when you graduate
You take a look around and you say HEY WAIT
This is the same as where I just came from
I thought it was over
(Aw that’s just great)

The whole damn world is just as obsessed
With who‘s the best dressed and who‘s having sex,
Who‘s got the money, who gets the honeys,
Who‘s kinda cute and who‘s just a mess
And you still don’t have the right look
And you don’t have the right friends
Nothing changes but the faces, the names, and the trends
High school never ends

Check out the popular kids
You’ll never guess what Jessica did
How did Mary Kate lose all that weight
And Katie had a baby so I guess Tom’s straight
And the only thing that matters
Is climbing up that social ladder
Still care about your hair and the car you drive
Doesn’t matter if you’re sixteen or thirty-five

Reese Witherspoon,
She’s the prom queen
Bill Gates,
Captain of the chess team
Jack Black, the clown
Brad Pitt, the quarterback
I’ve seen it all before
I want my money back

The whole damn world is just as obsessed
With who’s the best dressed and who’s having sex,
Who’s in the clubs and who’s on the drugs,
Who’s throwing up before they digest
And you still don’t have the right look
And you don’t have the right friends
And you’re still listen to the same sh*t you did back then
High school never ends

High school never ends

The whole damn world is just as obsessed
With who‘s the best dressed and who‘s having sex,
Who‘s got the money, who gets the honeys,
Who‘s kinda cute and who‘s just a mess
And I still don’t have the right look
And I still have the same three friends
And I’m pretty much the same as I was back then
High school never ends

High school never ends

High school never ends

Here we go again

In the past I've jokingly said "if you loved high school you flamed out early" but that's just jealousy talking.  Jaime loved high school- she was a cheerleader, in marching band, drama, etc. and has a group of four high school girlfriends who still meet up in some sunny locale every couple of years. (They called themselves the "Rowdy Mothers" back then- how sweet is that?)  Sounds like a lot of fun hearing her talk about those years.  When I was searching for images of Duxbury and Sonoma Dragons I was struck by the similarities:  tons of teenagers dressed in green smiling and having a good time doing something they love.  DHS isn't the Death Star any more than SVHS is Naboo- it's only my perceptions that make them seem that way.  I had a tough time in high school- it would have been nice to feel safer and less fearful- but it helped make me the person I am today.  I'm sure Nica will face her share of challenges but like they say, it's how you respond to adversity that shows what kind of person you are or will become. Best of luck to the Class of 2017 and GO DRAGONS! (both kinds).

Maple Oak, our cabin
The Love Family recently returned from a week long Art and Music Camp at River's Bend in Philo, CA.  Jaime taught drama to a super cute group of little girls who were obsessed with ABBA and I helped out with the afternoon music class.  Like many of my fellow campers, this is the only time all year that I indulge the "artist" within.  Along with a startling lack of talent, I am way too much of a perfectionist to be any kind of real artist.  I become overly focused on the final product and it never meets my expectations.  Even this year, I was initially disappointed with the raku teapot I worked on all week.  Yet as I look at my teapot now (see photo at the top of this post), I don't see its flaws as much as I remember the fun I had helping mix up clay in a kiddie pool with my feet, forming it around a river rock I picked out myself, building the feet, spout, handle, and lid, then glazing and firing it.  All of this amid conversations with my fellow pottery classmates.

My time at Art and Music Camp inspires this week's ALL KINDSA GIRLS salute to visual artists.  I've had the idea in the back of my mind for a long time, going back to 2011 when I saw The Weakerthans play "Sun In An Empty Room" live.  Edward Hopper is my favorite artist and band songwriter John K. Samson seems to feel the same as this is one of two songs on the Reunion Tour album inspired by a Hopper painting:
Sun In An Empty Room- Edward Hopper 1963
"Sun In An Empty Room"- The Weakerthans

Now that the furniture's returning to its Goodwill home
With dishes in last week's paper -
Rumors and elections, crosswords, and unending war
That blacken our fingers, smear their prints on every door pulled shut
Now that the last month's rent is scheming with the damage deposit,

Take this moment to decide (sun in an empty room)
If we meant it, if we tried (sun in an empty room)
Or felt around for far too much (sun in an empty room)
From things that accidentally touched (sun in an empty room)

Hands that we nearly hold with pennies for the GST
The shoulders we lean our shoulders into on the subway, mutter an apology
The shins that we kick beneath the table, that reflexive cry
The faces we meet one awkward beat too long and terrified

Know the things we need to say (sun in an empty room)
Have been said already anyway (sun in an empty room)
By parallelograms of light (sun in an empty room)
On walls that we repainted white (sun in an empty room)

Sun in an empty room
Sun in an empty room
Sun in an empty room
Sun in an empty room
Sun in an empty room
Sun in an empty room
Sun in an empty room
Sun in an empty room

Take eight minutes and divide (sun in an empty room)
By ninety million lonely miles (sun in an empty room)
And watch a shadow cross the floor (sun in an empty room)
We don't live here anymore (sun in an empty room)

That's one of the things I love about great visual art; it just sits there and we make of it what we will.   Here are the other artists that inspired songs on tonight's ALL KINDSA GIRLS:
Blue and Green Music - Georgia O'Keeffe 1921
"Georgia O"- The Nields

Vase With 12 Sunflowers - Vincent van Gogh 1888
"Vincent" - Don McLean

(My memory is a little hazy, but I think my mom had a reproduction of this van Gogh painting hanging in our kitchen in Brockton, Mass.  I remember eating breakfast and staring up at it.  In fact even as I look at now, I'm tasting Fruity Pebbles cereal....)

The Bad Doctors - James Ensor 1892
"Meet James Ensor" - They Might Be Giants
Jane Avril - Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec 1893
"Goodbye Toulouse" - The Stranglers

(Mum was big on the Post-Impressionists, along with the Van Gogh she also hung a couple of Gauguin reproductions, and a print of this Toulouse-Lautrec poster was in our family room in Duxbury for years)

The Old Guitarist - Pablo Picasso 1903
"Pablo Picasso" - The Modern Lovers

Celebes - Max Ernst 1921
"Max Ernst" - Mission of Burma

Print Gallery - M.C. Escher 1956
"Escher" - Teenage Fanclub

The Lovers - Rene Magritte 1928
"Magritte" - John Cale
(My favorite song discovery this show is John Cale's "Magritte" - I love the line "pinned to the edges of vision" and he offers great advice with "somebody's coming that hates us/better watch the art")

Gotham News - Willem de Kooning 1955
Interiors(Song For Willem de Kooning)-Manic Street Preachers

The Melody Haunts My Reverie
Roy Lichtenstein 1965

"Lichtenstein Painting" - Television Personalities
(Back in the early '90's my friend Francie introduced Jaime and I to a woman who worked for Roy Lichtenstein.  I figured that meant stretching canvasses or mixing paints but she actually painted on the canvas herself.  I was shocked!  You'd think that 25 years after Warhol introduced the "Factory" approach to art I would have been hip to the concept but I still pictured the lone artist sweating over a canvas in a tiny studio looking out over the rooftops of Paris....)

Self Portrait with Skull- Andy Warhol 1978
"Andy Warhol" - David Bowie

Polka Dot Madness 4 - Yayoi Kusama
"Art Class (Song for Yayoi Kusama)"- Superchunk
Michael Jackson and Bubbles - Jeff Koons 1988
"Jeff Koons" - Momus

(I know a lot of people think Jeff Koons is a charlatan but I get a kick out of him.  I saw this Michael Jackson sculpture while it was at SFMOMA fifteen years ago.  I'd been looking at it for five minutes or so before I noticed that MJ has three arms!  This, of course, made me love it even more.)

I'm going to wrap up this post by thanking all the teachers at Art and Music Camp, especially pottery instructors Joel and Michael who started our week with a trip to the river to dig up clay and ended it with a brilliant raku firing Saturday night.  Thought it didn't turn out the way I planned, my teapot has really grown on me and now I'm actually proud of it.

Also, my first try on the pottery wheel!

I'll leave you with the second Edward Hopper-inspired song from The Weakerthans' Reunion Tour

Night Windows - Edward Hopper 1928
"Night Windows" - The Weakerthans

In the stick count for the song with knowing you're gone
Glancing up at where you lived when you lived here
I see you suddenly alive and nearly smiling
Stop and hold my breath and watch the way we used to be

The full moon makes our faces shine like over-ironed polyester
Then disappears behind the clouds
And leaves me under empty rows of night windows

We could walk to where these streets get pulled together
Blinking, lined with gravel, shoulder squared towards an end
Where the radio resounds from doppling traffic
Where the power lines steal lessons from the hourly news

Depluralize our casualties, drown the generals out in static
We turn and watch our city sprawl and send us signals in the glow
Of night windows

But you're not coming home again, and I won't ever get to say
"Remember how I'm sorry that I miss the way it could be"
"Remember how I'm sorry that I miss the way it could be"

Night windows
